It follows a format similar to the original Layers of Fear game, taking place in the same (but more decrepit) house and creating tension through dark interiors and sudden scares. There’s a baby doll and oh god why is it violently twisting? It melts into a thick black goo and you move on, hoping beyond hope that a later sequence doesn’t involve sentient toys stalking you in the shadows. This game was an effective, creepy experience. LAYERS OF FEAR: INHERITANCE follows a young woman returning to her childhood home to work through lingering memories of an abusive childhood. Up close, you can confirm that, yep, the noise is definitely coming from inside. You’ll hear a distorted child’s cry in the distance and, knowing full well that the only thing of importance in the room is a closed chest, you walk towards it. Occasionally, you’ll need to dig around for specific items, but there isn’t an inventory to manage, and much of the time you merely need to look in a certain direction to trigger scenery changes. There were a few spots where I wasn’t sure where to go or what to do, and one was a sequence that involved finding obscured checkers. Note: I played through the steam version, both in early access and upon full release of the game. Riveting atmosphere, fitting music and otherworldly scenes are going to haunt your thoughts for several days after the completion of your walkthrough. A nightmarish journey through the mind of a deranged talented painter. ![]() Doors that open slightly as you approach them but slam shut as you get close. Layers of Fear is probably the scariest game of all time. This is a title built by people who know that the anticipation of a scare is just as important as the scare itself. Audio cues provide guidance, as do doors that lock and unlock to keep you headed in the right direction. Building up suspense and caution with the player is one aspect that Layers of Fear 2 does incredibly well. For as much as the floor plan enjoys messing with you, it is rarely confusing.
